Outline

The Dutch East Indies is central. For more than three centuries it was a colony of the Netherlands, ruled by residents, such as Christiaan ‘s father (12 years old, Batavia). They feel strongly attached to the Netherlands and when their homeland is invaded by the Germans, they voluntarily donate money and valuables as a contribution to warfare. But then the Dutch East Indies themselves are overrun. Through Japan. Christiaan and his father end up in a men’s camp where they try to survive under terrible conditions.
