Introduction

Outlander is an historical drama television series based on the ongoing novel series of the same name by Diana Gabaldon.

Developed by Ronald D. Moore, the show premiered on 09 August 2014, on Starz. It stars Caitriona Balfe as Claire Randall, a married former World War II military nurse in Scotland who, in 1945, finds herself transported back to 1743. There she encounters the dashing Highland warrior Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan), a member of Gabaldon’s fictionalised version of Clan Fraser of Lovat, and becomes embroiled in the Jacobite rising.

Outline

Claire awakes at Craigh Na Dun in 1948. Grieving over Jamie’s assumed death in battle, she is reunited with Frank, who cannot understand her reappearance but is desperate to reconcile. Claire explains where and when she has been, including her relationship with Jamie and that she is carrying his child. They agree that they will raise the child together and resume married life. She later recalls her arrival with Jamie to France, where they make contact with Jamie’s Jacobite cousin Jared Fraser, and make an enemy of the Comte St. Germain.
