Outline
Series 01
Helen Hunt and Sean Bean star in this sweeping historical drama following the intertwined lives of ordinary civilians across Europe who are caught up in World War II. An English translator in Warsaw attempts to smuggle his Polish lover back to Manchester, without the knowledge of sweetheart. Meanwhile, an American war correspondent makes a discovery at the Polish-German border and runs up against censorship in Germany. Each of the characters are from different backgrounds and countries, and play different roles in the war, but are united by their struggle to survive in difficult circumstances.
Series 02
War reaches north Africa, where Harry’s unit face brutal desert conditions. In mainland Europe, citizens are pushed to breaking point, while battle rages in the sky over Manchester.

Locations
Filming took place in Chester in November 2018, Liverpool in March 2019 and also included other locations such as Prague, Lytham St. Annes, Wigan, and Lyme Park.

Trivia
- Series 1 took two years to make.
- The street scenes in Season 2 Episode 6 were shot in the Ulster Folk and Transport museum at Cultra outside Belfast and the small town of Holywood.
