Introduction
In the 1960s, the US government came up with an experimental plan supported by the oil companies to try using nuclear explosions to extract natural gas in the American West. The tests set for Wyoming were known as the Wagon Wheel Project.

Outline
After World War II the US government started the Plowshare Programme to find peaceful uses for nuclear explosives. Most of the proposals were absurd including a proposal for nuclear stimulation of natural gas fields. In the late sixties and early seventies three nuclear stimulation experiments were carried out in Colorado and New Mexico and a fourth was planned for a small community in rural Wyoming.
