Introduction

Soldiers of the Royal Wessex Rangers face dangerous tours of duty in Northern Ireland during the Troubles and difficult times back home with alienated families and uncomprehending friends.

Bilinski is being investigated for possible complicity in people smuggling for the snakeheads in return for favours received, both sexual and financial.

Corporal Box is furious: he should have been going home to England, but he has to replace Bilinski in charge of 6 platoon, which is itself festering with resentment.

Pickering is told in the most gentlemanly way to stay away from the woman he was falling for.
