Introduction

World War II raged across the globe on virtually every continent, across the seven seas and in the air.

For the 9-part 1997 documentary Warbirds of World War II look here.

Outline

Follow the air forces of the Allies and Axis as they fought plane to plane with fighters and the bomber forces that devastated cities throughout Europe, Russia, North Africa, islands in the Pacific, Southeast Asia and the Japanese Home Islands.

Tens of thousands of warplanes perished on both sides as did tens of thousands of air crews between 1939 and the end of the war with the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945.
