Introduction
The World at War is a 26-episode British television documentary series chronicling the events of the Second World War.
Outline
Although those in the know figured it was just a matter of time, the United States only reluctantly participated in World War 2. But it was not a foregone conclusion that the United States would side against both Germany and Japan. Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbour precipitated a quick decision. But in Germany’s case a long series of mutual provocations, some intended, some not, gradually turned the United States against Germany.
On Our Way: U.S.A. (1939 to 1942) chronicles the opposition by various factions to the United States of America entry into the war, Lend Lease, U-boat attacks on Atlantic convoys and America’s graduated responses, the mobilisation of America after Pearl Harbour, the loss of the Philippines, the Doolittle Raid, Midway and Guadalcanal.
Interviewees include J. K. Galbraith, John J. McCloy, Paul Samuelson, Isamu Noguchi, Jimmy Doolittle, Richard Tregaskis and Vannevar Bush.
