The Silent Service is an American syndicated anthology television series based on actual events in the submarine section of the United States Navy.
They called her “The Ugly Duckling”. Over-sized and ungainly, she was constantly ridiculed while standing in at Mare Island for an over-haul.
Finally, the jibes prompted officers and crew of the USS Nautilus to bet a month’s pay against crews of two newer type subs. The Nautilus said she would bag the biggest game of all on the first patrol.
During the crucial Battle of Midway, in June 1942, the Ugly Duckling got her chance. Damaged but in danger of being towed to safety by helpful cruisers, the Japanese aircraft carrier Soryu felt the Nautilus’ sting. Three torpedoes hit the carrier, sealing her doom and sending her to the bottom. As in the fairy tale, the Ugly Duckling came through.
