The Expanse is an American science fiction television series developed by Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby, based on the series of novels of the same name by James S.A. Corey.
The series is set in a future where humanity has colonised the Solar System. It follows a disparate band of antiheroes – United Nations Security Council member Chrisjen Avasarala (Shohreh Aghdashloo), police detective Josephus Miller (Thomas Jane), ship’s officer James Holden (Steven Strait) and his crew – as they unwittingly unravel and place themselves at the centre of a conspiracy which threatens the system’s fragile state of Cold War.
Alex and Naomi inform Holden of the explosion and an impending earthquake; it will be followed by a shock wave, and then a tsunami that will destroy the settlement and submerge a third of the continent. Once privy to this knowledge, the settlers finally consent to evacuate Ilus; the Belters only do so after Holden agrees to vouch for their claim on the planet to the UN and Avasarala, which antagonises Murtry. The explosion prompts Ilus’ defences to shut down the fusion reactors on orbiting ships. When the Israel dispatches a shuttle to begin evacuations, it is incinerated mid-descent. The settlers opt to take shelter in the nearby alien structure and begin evacuating supplies and people. The shock wave arrives near the end of the evacuation, killing some people at the settlement and wrecking many structures. Holden and Okoye finish evacuating everyone into the structure and close up a makeshift water barrier before the surrounding area is flooded. On Mars, the gang’s inside man fails to get them past a security door during a heist. Bobbie dons a space suit low on oxygen, climbs a maintenance tower, and manually disables the door’s hydraulics before she passes out. Drummer and Ashford obtain video evidence of Inaros’ presence on the Belter ship Pizzouza.
