With the recent discovery of over two hours of unique and never-before-heard sound recordings of the negotiations that confirmed Hitler’s humiliating victory over the French Third Republic and sealed the fate of the French people, we revisit the story of how France ended up in this critical situation, and what it meant for its future. Being able to hear, for the first time, the tension of the voices involved, the psychological back-and-forth, and even the sound of airplanes flying overhead – help to provide an intimate understanding of the significance of this disastrous day in history.
