Introduction

The Unknown War (Russian: “Великая Отечественная” (The Great Patriotic War) or “Неизвестная война” (The Unknown War) is an American documentary television series.

Outline

In a surprise attack on 22 June 1941, German forces destroyed more than two-thirds of the Soviet combat aircraft fleet while they were still stationed on the ground. Hitler and his generals felt that this devastating blow would end the war in Russia very quickly, but they were wrong. The Soviets fought back, developed new tactics, and slowly, gradually, the balance shifted.
