Introduction

The Last Ship is an American action-drama television series, loosely based on the 1988 novel of the same name by William Brinkley.

The series premiered on TNT on 22 June 2014 and concluded after five seasons on 11 November 2018.

Outline

After a global viral pandemic wipes out over 80% of the world’s population, the crew (consisting of 218 people) of a lone unaffected US Navy Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer, the fictional USS Nathan James (DDG-151), must try to find a cure, stop the virus, and save humanity.

The Last Ship is a 1988 post-apocalyptic fiction novel written by William Brinkley.

The Last Ship tells the story of a United States Navy guided missile destroyer, the fictional USS Nathan James (DDG-80), on patrol in the Barents Sea during a brief, full-scale nuclear war between the United States and the Soviet Union. It details the ship’s ensuing search for a new home for her crew.

The Last Ship was released as an e-book on 27 November 2013, published by Plume.

Trivia

  • The pilot episode was filmed at a number of locations across San Diego including aboard the USS Halsey (DDG-97), which is standing in for the show’s fictional USS Nathan James
  • .The former Atlantic liner RMS Queen Mary, now berthed at Long Beach, was also to be used extensively.
  • The USS Iowa museum ship was used in filming to represent a Russian Kirov-class battlecruiser.
