The Portuguese Falcon (original title: Capitão Falcão) is a 2015 Portuguese superhero comedy film directed by João Leitão.

Outline

Captain Falcão tells the story of a Portuguese superhero serving António de Oliveira Salazar in the fight against the communist “red menace” during the 1960’s, mercilessly satirising both the anti-communist propaganda of the Estado Novo and the left-leaning politics of the Armed Forces Movement.

  • The film was shot in Santarém and Lisbon.
  • Originally planned to be a TV show but was rewritten into a feature due to high public response to the pilot but lack of funds from the TV channels.
  • All of the characters who are officers in the Portuguese military are named after birds ( Capitão Falcão, Puto Perdiz, General Gaivota). Even Professor Peninha’s name is directly related to birds ( Peninha is Portuguese for little feather).
