Introduction

Star Trek: Lower Decks is an American adult animated television series created by Mike McMahan for the streaming service CBS All Access.

It is the ninth series in the Star Trek franchise, and was launched in 2020 as part of executive producer Alex Kurtzman’s expansion of the franchise.

Lower Decks is the first animated series created for All Access, and the first animated Star Trek series since the 1973-1974 series Star Trek: The Animated Series.

Outline

Boimler inadvertently reveals to the crew that Mariner is Captain Freeman’s daughter, leading to the crew treating her differently. The Cerritos picks up new crew members, including an Exocomp by the name of ‘Peanut Hamper’, who befriends Tendi. They receive a distress call from the USS Solvang, and arrive to find the ship destroyed by the Pakled, who have become a surprising threat while Starfleet has not been paying attention, engaging in piracy and ripping ships apart to add to their own massive battle cruisers. The Pakled begin tearing apart the Cerritos, while an injured Captain Freeman lets Mariner take command. Rutherford devises a plan to disable the Pakled, using a computer virus developed by his holographic creation, Badgey. Peanut Hamper refuses to deliver the virus, forcing Shaxs and Rutherford to fly a shuttle to the Pakled ship. There, Badgey uploads the virus, but also engages the ship’s self-destruct to kill Rutherford. Shaxs is forced to tear out Rutherford’s cybernetic implants, and sacrifices himself to help Rutherford escape. When more Pakled ships arrive, the Cerritos is saved by the arrival of the USS Titan, captained by William Riker. A funeral is held for Shaxs, while Rutherford awakens, having lost his long-term memory. Freeman makes peace with Mariner, and proposes she unofficially allows her to bend the rules more often. Boimler accepts a promotion to the USS Titan.
