Wine and War (2020)

Introduction

Wine and War (also stylised WINE and WAR) is a documentary about the history of winemaking in Lebanon and the resilience of the Lebanese entrepreneurial spirit seen through the lens of war and instability.

Outline

Woven into Lebanon’s ancient history is a rich tale of wine-making, resilience, and entrepreneurial spirit. Unravelling the story of the world’s fist wine merchants, Wine and War is a complex testament to the Lebanese people’s courage in the face of adversity, and a deep dive into the history of a nation which has bred masters of crisis management.

In 2013, inspired by the book Wines of Lebanon by Michael Karam, filmmakers Mark Johnston and Mark Ryan set out to change the perceptions of the Middle East – and in particular the tiny nation of Lebanon – by examining an enigmatic and misunderstood part of the world with winemakers who had a story to tell.
