Vikings: Valhalla is a historical drama streaming television series created by Jeb Stuart for Netflix. It is a sequel to the History’s Vikings, filmed in County Wicklow, Ireland.
Set one hundred years after the events of Vikings, the series chronicles the beginning of the end of the Viking Age, marked by the Battle of Stamford Bridge in 1066.
The series premiered on Netflix on 25 February 2022.
In her search for Yrsa, Freydis finds her deceased body hanging from the ceiling. Outside, she uncovers several headless bodies. Whilst in the centre, Kare cradles the baby. Within minutes, it appears that she is about to face certain death. That is until Kare notices that she has a sword from Uppsala. Instead, he tells her to tell Haakan that he is coming.
In return for the safety of her children, Emma asks King Canute what she can do to earn his kindness. But, he doesn’t want anything, and she is free to go if she wishes. She doesn’t, though, as she came to England as a young girl, and Emma wishes to remain here. Consequently, he asks Emma to be his advisor on getting the Saxons to accept him as King. Freydis informs Haakon of Kare’s threats. Later, after she watches Freydis fight, Haakan recalls that she also met Seer. And in her vision, the water leaves the harbour, only for the water to return as tall as the mountains, and in its wake, there is only one survivor: the last. And Haakan firmly believes that Freydis is the last.
King Canute reveals that he will restore Saxon titles, rebuild the bridge, and forge an empire that brings peace and wealth. In return, he wants loyalty, which, of course, he gets. The fleets return, and Freydis rushes to see Leif. But tragically, she learns that Ulf, Njal, and Skarde are dead. Now, she only has herself, Leif, and Liv. Meanwhile, Olaf sails to Denmark and visits King Canute’s wife, Queen Aelfgifu of Denmark (Pollyanna McIntosh). He tells her that rumours of marriage grow between King Canute and Emma. As he knows that King Canute will not allow him to rule Norway, he wants Queen Aelfgifu to deny the use of her power.
Godwin goes to visit King Canute, only to learn that he is having sex with Emma. As for Freydis, she tells Haakan that she will protect Kattegat, and after a hot bath, Freydis has sex with Harald. Upon meeting the Seer, Kare has flashbacks to his childhood when his young brother was brutally murdered. But now, Kare feels empowered and learns some truth from Seer. (Although, what that truth is remains unknown to the audience). When Canute learns that a boat has arrived from Denmark, he tells his guard to prepare his ship for departure. The episode ends as he tells Emma to “answer carefully”.
This episode is not as action-packed as the previous two. Instead, it seems to build on the relationships, with examples including King Canute and Emma becoming romantic. As for Olaf, he does a bit of stirring, and it remains to be seen whether his ploys will work in his favour.
