America’s Lost Airship: Weapon of War (2022)

Introduction

A look at the rise and fall of the airship and the US military’s failed attempts to make it the future of warfare in the 1920s and 1930s.

Outline

Once the fastest long-distance craft in the world, airships were used to travel the world to spy on foreign countries and, at their peak, were designed to be aircraft carriers of the skies, pouring fighter planes into aerial combat – the very future of warfare. This film explores their military use as bombers in the First World War, and as aircraft carriers in the 1920s and ’30s. It reveals their fiery end as one by one they dropped from the sky in flames. From a futuristic craft that symbolised the future to the Hindenburg’s destruction captured on camera, the documentary outlines a story of a world preparing for war, and a future that never arrived

Witness the rise and fall of this failed weapon of war and follow a team of scientists as they race to retrieve key artefacts from a recently discovered sunken airship in hopes of shedding new light on this lost chapter of history.
