1945: The Year That Changed The World (2004): S01E04 – The War in the Pacific

Introduction

A vivid account of a year regarded as one of history’s most fateful, as the escalated global conflict drew to a tragic close.

Outline

The American embargo of supplies led Japan to attack Pearl Harbour. No hesitation marked the decision to utilise the newly-developed atomic bomb on Japan. Experts deemed that it was the quickest way to get the Japanese to surrender. When the war was won in South East Asia and the Pacific, the US was forced to utilise British troops to restore order. They in turn used Japanese forces to quell growing calls for nationalism in the region; this combustible mixture led to the Korean, Vietnam and Cambodian wars.
