Introduction

Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbour took place on 07 December 1941. The US military suffered 18 ships damaged or sunk, and 2,400 people were killed. Its most significant consequence was the entrance of the United States into World War II. The US had previously been officially neutral but subsequently entered the Pacific War, the Battle of the Atlantic and the European theatre of war. Following the attack, the US interned 120,000 Japanese-Americans, 11,000 German-Americans, and 3,000 Italian-Americans.

On 07 December 1941 at 07:53 am, a Japanese air squadron attacked the American fleet anchored in the waters of Pearl Harbour. The United States and its defensive strategy were struck right at the core. The attack was a major turning point. The very next day, the US officially entered the war, ending their policy of isolationism and taking the conflict to a whole new and truly global level. How did Pearl Harbour change the face of WWII and, in turn, that of the world?
