Outline
- Hillinghead and Ashe identify the man in the photo as Sir Julian Harker, a wealthy stockbroker who made his money from the predictions of his mother, alleged clairvoyant Lady Harker. Hillinghead is invited to a seance by Sir Julian, and Lady Harker claims to speak with Defoe’s spirit, but her “connection” is broken before it can name the killer. Hillinghead is drugged by the Harkers and photographed in a compromising position with Defoe’s corpse. He returns to Ashe’s apartment, warning that Harker is planning something. The two give in to their mutual attraction and have sex. Returning to the crime scene, Hillinghead carves his name in a brick wall.
- The child, Esther, blackmails Whiteman in Yiddish to be paid off otherwise she will tell his superiors of his involvement with the body. The organisation instructs him to kill her, and have them followed. Whitehead cannot bring himself to kill Esther, so fakes her death and hides her in his flat.
- Elias Mannix is arrested and tells Hasan his foster parents “know things” about future events. They have told him similar bodies have appeared before, and that he will be responsible for a devastating explosion which Hasan will make him carry out. Her superiors ignore this, and remand him. Hasan returns to Longharvest Lane again and notices the name “Hillinghead” and the tattoo symbol from the body’s wrist scratched on the same wall.
- Maplewood takes Defoe to the medical facility where he observes his doppelganger die. He denies all knowledge of Chapel Perilous. Mannix informs her that the identical body found is Defoe’s, but from two days in the future, as his organisation managed to create time travel which threatens the Executive’s power. He instructs her to follow Defoe.
