Outline

  • In 1889, Mannix is taken to a hospital and adopts the identity of Sir Julian Harker, a veteran who supposedly died in Mandalay. Lady Harker questions Mannix during a Tarot card reading where he admits that he is not her son, but she agrees to go along with the deception as Mannix promises to grow her fortunes with his knowledge, bring renewed life and prestige to the Harker family and create a better future.
  • In 1890, Mannix (now Harker) awaits the arrival of Defoe’s body, and sees Ashe photographing it moments after it appears. He hides in the alcove and is caught in the reflection of the window. He becomes closely acquainted with Hillinghead’s daughter Polly, a skilled pianist, and employs her as a caregiver for his mother. Harker purchases the bank and oversees construction of the bomb vault. After Hillinghead is arrested, Harker has him killed and tells Polly it was suicide. Harker and Polly happily marry and she gives birth to their son, Hayden. Shortly after the birth, Harker introduces her to the cult and confesses his true identity. Their close and loving relationship leads her to becoming a full and willing participant.
  • The now elderly Mannix and Polly prepare to poison Esther, and Mannix completes the series of recordings to instruct his cult.
  • Maplewood is promoted to Inspector but denies knowledge of Mannix’s and Hasan’s whereabouts. Secretly, she has rescued Hasan who is being treated at her brother’s apartment. She finds Defoe’s notes and recalls his theory that time travel occurs both ways. Four days later, they rescue a copy of Defoe’s body that appears in the lane. Hasan tells them Andrew Morley told her Mannix died regretting the bombing, so can maybe be persuaded to alter his plans. Maplewood enters Throat and arrives in 1890, but her spinal orthotic she needs to walk does not come with her.
