Introduction

Das Boot is a 2018 German television series produced for the TV channel Sky and a sequel to Das Boot (1981).

Like the original film, the series is based on Lothar-Günther Buchheim’s 1973 book Das Boot, but with additions from Buchheim’s 1995 sequel Die Festung.

Outline

Buchner, Cremer and Pauli are the only survivors after the destruction of U-949, and Pauli soon dies from his injuries. Cremer says goodbye to his friend and calls him ‘Winnetou’, the name of their Apache hero. After hours of being adrift, Buchner and Cremer are rescued and eventually land in the Bay of Naples, where they meet Chief Petty Officer Rahn and the crew of a decommissioned U-boat. When Buchner wants to take command of the boat, he and Cremer are locked up in the torpedo room. Bettina visits Gustav in prison where she meets Koch. Knowing that he is listening in on their conversation, the Grubers blame Klaus for Weiss’s demise in Lisbon. At the National Socialist People’s Welfare orphanage managed by Mrs Schorlau, Hannie asks after young Herta’s missing friend, Gretchen. Later, Hannie receives a file on Schulz that lists his prior alleged crimes which include looting, assault, and complicity in gang rape. Meeting in secret with Werner, Koch reports on his ‘progress’ with a ‘bishop’s envoy’. Ehrenberg arranges for Klaus to travel by U-boat from Naples to meet with Admiral Kenton. Saying goodbye to Hannie, Klaus tells her, “You’re the best of us Hoffmanns”. Knowing of Klaus’s plan to sneak away to Italy, Schulz and the SS ambush him but he gets away.
