Introduction

Das Boot is a 2018 German television series produced for the TV channel Sky and a sequel to Das Boot (1981).

Like the original film, the series is based on Lothar-Günther Buchheim’s 1973 book Das Boot, but with additions from Buchheim’s 1995 sequel Die Festung.

Outline

U-330’s deck gun is jammed and unable to stop the plane from circling back and killing the ship’s survivors in the water. Using a change in wind direction, Klaus has the gun aimed ahead of the plane’s path, making a direct hit on its rear after it passes overhead. The American pilot parachutes out and is captured. After learning that Klaus plans to hand over intelligence to the Americans, Buchner insists on rejoining the war, but Klaus makes it plain that “the war is already lost”. After disclosing Ehrenberg’s high praise for Buchner, Klaus asks him to give thought of hope when the war ends. Moving quietly up to Kenton’s ship amid the Allied invasion forces, Klaus holds the pilot hostage and demands to come on board. In Berlin, Koch enlists Bettina as a contact in Brazil for the trafficking of stolen valuables. Schulz learns about a conspiracy organised by ‘Figaro’, which he takes to mean ‘Fidelio’. At the rendezvous to ambush Fidelio, Schulz is surprised to find Gluck. About to be tortured, Gluck tells Koch that he feels liberated. Ehrenberg presents a scale model of a human torpedo that is armed before it is released. Lessing is uneasy about the 10% chance of survival for the new young recruits. That evening, he learns that the Allies have landed in the Gulf of Salerno and Fidelio’s cover is blown. Hannie returns to the orphanage to fetch Herta but hears lies from Mrs Schorlau about Herta’s return to her uncle. After uncovering a file about Gretchen’s placement in the Lebensborn programme, Hannie overhears of Werner’s involvement. Hiding in a car that takes her to Werner’s, Hannie finds Gretchen and Herta but they are quickly surrounded by Werner and his men.
