Introduction

Das Boot is a 2018 German television series produced for the TV channel Sky and a sequel to Das Boot (1981).

Like the original film, the series is based on Lothar-Günther Buchheim’s 1973 book Das Boot, but with additions from Buchheim’s 1995 sequel Die Festung.

Outline

Klaus hands over the negatives to Kenton and begs him to help end the war, but Kenton refuses because the war is profitable to American industry. After Klaus is let go, Kenton learns that the information on negatives is useless. As the crew of U-330 prepare to surrender and scuttle their boat, Klaus, Buchner and Cremer sail back to Naples. Reporting himself as a traitor to U-boat command, Klaus wants Ehrenberg to know that his mission has failed. Soon after, Buchner and Cremer catch a ride with a German lorry and leave Klaus behind. At Werner’s, Mrs Schorlau lets Hannie take Herta home, but not Gretchen. Later, Hannie’s information about Werner’s pedophile ring leads to their arrest. Ehrenberg prepares to meet Fidelio and is astonished to be greeted by Lessing. Ehrenberg explains that the explosives underneath the torpedo model will set off when it is presented to Hitler, killing everyone including Lessing. Schulz kills Gluck but suspects that he is not Fidelio. When Schulz finally learns that U-330’s orders had come from the Tirpitzufer office, he forces into Lessing’s home to confront Fidelio. Speaking with courage, Lessing believes that other Fidelios will follow after him. Schulz shoots Lessing in the back and wants him to beg for mercy as Hannie’s father did. Hannie takes Lessing’s gun and puts Schulz down. Bettina visits Gustav in prison and gives him a cyanide pill to help him commit suicide. Koch tells her to expect a shipment of gold in Brazil after he has taken care of one final loose end, Klaus. Klaus waits at the shore and Sal sits with him. After hinting that Klaus is like “a regular Jesus Christ” betrayed by his own people, Sal stabs him and whispers, “nothing personal”. In Germany, Hannie receives from Ehrenberg Klaus’s torpedo timer and a letter. In the letter, Klaus recounts the true motive of their daring childhood dinghy race, that Hannie had taken on the Italian boys who bullied Klaus because the Hoffmanns “don’t let injustice pass”. Klaus dies believing that Hannie will be victorious again.
