Star Trek: Lower Decks (2020): S01E09 – Crisis Point

Star Trek: Lower Decks is an American adult animated television series created by Mike McMahan for the streaming service CBS All Access.

It is the ninth series in the Star Trek franchise, and was launched in 2020 as part of executive producer Alex Kurtzman’s expansion of the franchise.

Lower Decks is the first animated series created for All Access, and the first animated Star Trek series since the 1973-1974 series Star Trek: The Animated Series.

Boimler creates a holodeck program using the crews’ private logs to produce an accurate simulation of the Cerritos to prepare for an interview with Captain Freeman. After Freeman sends Mariner to therapy, she spitefully takes over Boimler’s program to create a ‘movie’, where she plays the villainous Vindicta, invading the Cerritos with her friends and killing its crew. Boimler joins the holographic crew instead, along with Rutherford, while Tendi leaves after being disturbed by Mariner’s behaviour. Mariner ultimately crashes the virtual Cerritos and fights a holographic recreation of herself, realising her true feelings for her mother and Starfleet as she does. Concluding this ‘therapy’ has worked, she leaves the holodeck, while Boimler completes the simulation and unintentionally learns that Freeman is Mariner’s mother, which causes him to panic and flunk his interview.
