Introduction

ANZAC Girls is an Australian television drama series that first screened on ABC1 on 10 August 2014.

The true stories of extraordinary young women who witness the brutality and heroism of war and rise to meet the challenge.

Outline

The six-part series tells the rarely told true stories of the nurses serving with the Australian Army Nursing Service at Alexandria, Lemnos, and the Western Front during the First World War.

The series is based on Peter Rees’ book The Other ANZACs: Nurses at War 1914-1918 as well as diaries, letters, photographs and historical documents. The series was written by Felicity Packard and Niki Aken, produced by Screentime, and filmed in South Australia.

  • Over 3,720 Australian and New Zealand (ANZAC) nurses served overseas during World War One.
    • Fifty-six ANZAC nurses were awarded the Royal Red Cross.
    • Two hundred and ten ANZAC nurses were awarded the Associate Red Cross.
    • However, only seven ANZAC nurses were awarded Military Medals.
  • This television production, which broadcast premiered in 2014, commemorates the Centenary of the commencement of World War One in 1914.
  • Todd Lasance, Dustin Clare and Brooke Williams all previously starred together in Starz’s ‘Spartacus: Blood and Sand, Vengance, War of The Damned and Gods of The Arena’.
