Introduction

Star Trek: Lower Decks is an American adult animated television series created by Mike McMahan for the streaming service CBS All Access.

It is the ninth series in the Star Trek franchise, and was launched in 2020 as part of executive producer Alex Kurtzman’s expansion of the franchise.

Lower Decks is the first animated series created for All Access, and the first animated Star Trek series since the 1973-1974 series Star Trek: The Animated Series.

Outline

Discouraged that playing it safe is holding him back from advancing in rank, Boimler opts to say yes to more opportunities that come his way. Following some positive experiences bonding with superior officers, Boimler unthinkingly agrees to be the prey for hunter alien named K’ranch. Boimler flees, fearing for his life, until he decides to turn the tables and hunt K’ranch instead. He is easily taken down, but K’ranch reveals that his people practice catch and release hunting with non-lethal methods. He commends Boimler to his superior officers. Boimler, ecstatic to have received more recognition in a single day of being bold than his years of caution, resolves to remain “Bold Boimler”. Meanwhile, Mariner joins Ransom, Rutherford, and Billups on a mission to Dulaine to repair a broken orbital lift while engaging in diplomatic relations with the Dulainians. In an effort to prove Mariner’s insubordinate tendencies, Ransom has the engineering team engage in diplomacy instead while he and Mariner do the repairs, despite its inefficiency. Fearing that Rutherford and Billups are in danger after they transgress upon delicate Dulainian customs, Mariner sneaks away to assist them, but returns when Ransom apologizes for trying to provoke her. They repair the diplomatic ties with the Dulainians and rescue Rutherford and Billups.
