Introduction

Star Trek: Lower Decks is an American adult animated television series created by Mike McMahan for the streaming service CBS All Access.

It is the ninth series in the Star Trek franchise, and was launched in 2020 as part of executive producer Alex Kurtzman’s expansion of the franchise.

Lower Decks is the first animated series created for All Access, and the first animated Star Trek series since the 1973-1974 series Star Trek: The Animated Series.

Outline

Captain Freeman rewards the exhausted engineering crew for their tireless work by taking them to a relaxation spa, the Dove. However, the crew continues to engage in work at the spa, causing Freeman’s stress level to rise to emergency levels. The engineering crew, feeling guilty, responds by creating a machine that is able to instantly destress her, to the spa manager’s chagrin. Meanwhile, Boimler, Tendi, and Mariner complain about the cramped quarters and lack of privacy in lower decks. After overhearing that delta shift plans to hack into the lottery to gain individual upper deck room assignments, Boimler, Mariner, and Tendi attempt to circumvent them and hack into the lottery first. The journey through the bowels of the ship to reach the terminal is perilous and they wind up stuck waiting with the members of Delta shift. The beta and delta shift members seemingly bond before delta shift traps them in order to get to the lottery terminal first. Beta shift breaks free and manages to reach the terminal first, but sees that only one room is available. Not wanting to break up their friend group, they opt to allow Delta shift to fight over it. They are dismayed when they learn that Delta shift opted to share the single room among their four members, which they had not considered doing themselves.
