Introduction

Star Trek: Lower Decks is an American adult animated television series created by Mike McMahan for the streaming service CBS All Access.

It is the ninth series in the Star Trek franchise, and was launched in 2020 as part of executive producer Alex Kurtzman’s expansion of the franchise.

Lower Decks is the first animated series created for All Access, and the first animated Star Trek series since the 1973-1974 series Star Trek: The Animated Series.

Outline

Rutherford’s implant malfunctions, allowing an alternate personality, “Red Rutherford”, to take over. During a skirmish with security, Rutherford ends up in a coma. In his mindscape, Rutherford realizes that Red is his younger self, whose memories were saved before he received his implant. An angry first year recruit in Starfleet who funds his unsanctioned engineering projects by secretly building and racing space vehicles, Red challenges Rutherford to a race with any vehicle they can imagine; the winner gets control of their body. Rutherford wins by piloting a Delta Flyer crewed by his lower decks friends. Red concedes, seeing that his new life brought growth, and shares a memory of how they got their implant before he disappears: young Rutherford’s experimental engine blew up, gravely injuring him. Shadowy members of Starfleet installed the implant to erase his memories of their own mysterious illegal activity. Meanwhile, Ransom assigns Boimler and Mariner to staff the Starfleet recruitment booth at Tulgana IV’s job fair, warning them not to step out of line. They are provoked and mocked by various attendees, including a smug former Starfleet officer, Petra Aberdeen. Boimler tries to keep Mariner calm, but eventually snaps himself and rampages through the fair berating the other attendees for taking everything Starfleet does for all of them for granted. Unwittingly, his antics inspire enough attendees to sign up that Mariner meets her quota. Later, Ransom punishes Boimler with a night in the brig, but commends him for defending Starfleet. Mariner receives a communication from Aberdeen, who apologises, but offers her a job if she ever finds Starfleet too confining.
