Outline
Boimler programs a sequel to Mariner’s holodeck movie, called Crisis Point II: Paradoxus where Romulans have stolen a top secret gem capable of time travel, intending to use it to erase the Federation. However, Boimler receives some bad news and loses his enthusiasm, leaving Tendi to lead the story’s exciting mission. Instead, he becomes fixated on a side quest that promises the secret to life. Annoyed, Mariner ditches him, but learns from Commander Ransom that Boimler’s transporter twin, William, died in a gas leak in his sleep. She returns to the programme and helps Boimler in his quest, recognising that the programme helped her and can do the same for him. Boimler eventually finds the programme’s mythical being who can reveal the secret to life. Asking it why William senselessly died and what it means for himself, the being can only parrot back inspirational quotes. Boimler goes on a frustrated rampage until he wakes up on an idyllic farm with Hikaru Sulu, who tells him to embrace randomness, both good and bad, as it represents the unexpected joy of life. Satisfied, Boimler wakes up in sick bay, realizing that the farm was a dream while he passed out from near fatal dehydration in the holodeck. Meanwhile, Tendi’s success as the lead officer in the holodeck helps her realize that she aspires to become a captain. Elsewhere, William is revived, his death a ruse to draft him into Section 31.
