Introduction

Star Trek: Lower Decks is an American adult animated television series created by Mike McMahan for the streaming service CBS All Access.

It is the ninth series in the Star Trek franchise, and was launched in 2020 as part of executive producer Alex Kurtzman’s expansion of the franchise.

Lower Decks is the first animated series created for All Access, and the first animated Star Trek series since the 1973-1974 series Star Trek: The Animated Series.

Outline

Freeman’s planetary-revisitation initiative, “Project Swing By,” is approved. Admiral Buenamigo assigns her to visit Ornara, a planet whose population were forced to quit an addictive substance, felicium, due to Jean-Luc Picard’s actions seventeen years earlier. To Freeman’s dismay, they are to be accompanied by journalist Victoria Nuzé; Freeman cracks down on recreation and controls Nuzé’s access to crew, hoping to project competence. Finding Ornara thriving and uninterested in Federation aid, Freeman and Buenamigo decide the Cerritos will visit nearby Brekka, whose sole industry had been felicium, in hopes of justifying Swing By. After Mariner circumvents Freeman to speak with Nuzé, Nuzé confronts Freeman about many embarrassing details of past missions. Incensed, Freeman immediately transfers Mariner to Starbase 80, a dead-end assignment. Mariner is rendered heartbroken by her mother’s actions and the angry approval of her crewmates. The Cerritos discover a depopulated Brekka occupied by the Breen, and are narrowly saved by the Aledo, a fully automated Starfleet ship of the new Texas class. Nuzé’s report is heavily critical of Freeman, and reveals that the embarrassing details were gleaned from careless statements by the approved interviews, while Mariner had only glowing words for the ship and Freeman. A remorseful Freeman tries to reach Mariner at Starbase 80, but learns she has resigned from Starfleet and is now Petra Aberdeen’s first officer, setting off for parts unknown.
